Full Job Description

  • Recruitment, along with HR, of permanent drivers, both van, 7.5t and HGV in accordance with approved budgets and staff numbers.

  • Conduct and refinement of the induction process for new drivers/agency drivers including performing driver assessments.

  • Ensuring all drivers have read and understood the driver's handbook and the drivers code of conduct

  • Ensuring drivers are adhering to the policies contained within the driver's handbook, paying close attention to driver hours.

  • Ensuring that all drivers are adhering to the Driver's Code of Conduct.

  • Taking or recommending immediate disciplinary action where drivers are in breach of the driver's handbook or Code of Conduct.

  • Managing driver and admin staff hours and anomalies on isys for smooth HR and payroll processes.

  • Replying in a timely fashion to internal departments with any queries raised. No query should take longer than 24 hours to resolve.

  • Recruitment of transport administration staff in accordance with approved budgets and staff numbers.

  • Ensuring shift patterns in place to cover Saturday's with employed drivers to eliminate agency.

  • Ensuring driver debriefs are thorough and carried out in accordance with the company debrief policy.

  • Investigating driver anomalies like missing cash, tyres not returned, unauthorised stops, unauthorised door openings, excessive idles and taking disciplinary action where necessary.

  • Ensuring the first delivery tyres are checked on the van prior to leaving yard

  • Using daily, weekly & monthly telematic data reports to debrief drivers in order to prevent accidents in accordance with the company policy. For the avoidance of doubt the Transport Manager is responsible for reducing accidents by diligently carrying out such debriefs.

  • Reducing the use of agency/freelance drivers to a minimum by the effective recruitment of casual drivers who are employed by the company.

  • Working closely with ATC to allocate drivers to routes/runs daily, obtaining authorisation for and organising agency drivers if required.

  • Working with the Depot Manager allocating some warehouse staff as driver cover and using drivers in the warehouse as an option for cover when needed.

  • On the rare occasions where agency or freelance drivers are necessary only using an agency that has negligent driver insurance (in the case of agencies) or their own insurance (in the case of freelance) and when such person or agency agrees that it will be liable in the event of an accident that is the fault of the agency driver or such driver.

  • Actively managing driver holidays to ensure cover is maintained in house without the need to use agency.

  • Ensuring drivers complete daily checks reports and that defects are actioned accordingly.

  • Working closely with internal maintenance team to ensure vehicles are safe to drive legally.

  • Ensuring accidents are reported correctly and investigations are completed thoroughly, and any necessary action taken.

  • Producing weekly reports to Depot Manager on performance of department.

  • Performing monthly 1 to 1's and annual appraisals with drivers and admin team.

  • Strict compliance with the company rules on rescheduling drops and returned tyres.

  • Carrying out the enforcement of the above rules (in conjunction with HR) through appropriate disciplinary measures.

  • There will be a need to learn constantly and to carry out the routing as part of your duties for your initial employment

  • Be the legally responsible person for the depot with own CPC tagged to depot operational license.

    This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and committed individual with good experience of the transport industry and a strong history of managing people to establish and develop our Chepstow Transport Department., Hold an Operators CPC Transport Licence (desired)

  • Previous experience in a Transport Management position.

  • Management experience (dealing with HR matters)
