JOB SUMMARY: The Principal Architect will perform an essential role in collaboration with the design manager in operational efficiency and growth of Architectural Practice, setting direction and approach in how we design, build, and evolve a scalable and maintainable portfolio of projects. This will be achieved through effective client management, which is a key element of the principal architect role. The principal architect will promote consistent architectural best practices, ensuring the team can meet and adapt to the challenges and objectives faced by expanding the client base and adapting to external requirements., Primary objectives include:

  • Delivery of the strategic vision and business plan through collaboration with the Design Manager, design team and wider management across the business.

  • Developing new relationship, expanding the client base, whilst maintaining current relationship. Taking full responsibility for client pipelines and partnership work.

  • Providing key input into the business plan, to enable growth, ensuring alignment with the Gusto vision and mission.

  • Negotiation of contract terms for viable projects, assessing project viability and term negotiation which support the growth plan of the business and aligns with the vision.

  • Conducting analysis and feasibility studies with the design team input to ensure projects are viable and objectives can be met in the expected periods.

  • Work closely with all members of the design team, mentoring and supporting them to achieve professional development and enhance their skill sets.

  • Support the Design manager with day-to-day operational needs as required, communicating effectively to give clear guidance and requirements to deliver projects efficiently and effectively.

  • Continue to improve on the SGA and Gusto's excellence in architectural design and client satisfaction.

  • Ensuring the practice is aware of technological developments, assessing suitability for projects and driving change where viable to support the practice to stay ahead in relation to sustainable design.

  • Financial Management of the design function within Gusto, making required changes to ensure financial targets are achieved.

  • Risk Management: Identifying potential risks and technical challenges early in the project lifecycle and proposing mitigation strategies to minimize impact on project timelines and quality.

  • Planning and maintaining all health, safety, risk, and hazard aspects associated with the role.

    Excellent client service and exemplary architectural design are at the heart of what we do, as recognised by the many awards that have been won.


  • Not only should the required person demonstrate the enthusiasm and ability to continue this ethos, but to build on the strong existing foundation.

    They should demonstrate strong commercial, organisational and people skills. Experience of running an architectural practice and entrepreneurial approach to finding work would be an important advantage.,
  • Part 3 qualified in architecture

  • Trained in the use of Revit, Auto CAD and other related software., 6+ years practical experience working as a Principal/Senior Architect within the UK.

  • Outstanding knowledge and experience of all RIBA stages 1-7.

  • An experienced leader with project management skills.

  • Excellent presentation skills.

  • Outstanding design ability.

  • Experienced in Revit, AutoCAD and other design related software.

  • Detailed knowledge of UK Planning & Building Regulations

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience in sustainable design, with robust design awareness.

  • Proficient in working in a customer-facing role directly working with clients.

  • Confident networking and relationship building skills.

    Studio-G are a design led architectural practice in the East Midlands with the Gusto Group of companies and are seeking a Principal Architect to take forward and sustainably grow the business as the present partners gradually phase towards retirement after years of hard work building the business to where it is now.

    Rate of pay will be £60k - £65k per annum dependant on experience and skillset. Paid monthly on the last working day of each month.

  • Discretionary bonus scheme.

  • You will be contracted to work 37.5 hours per week, working hours will be flexible to meet business needs (Monday -Friday).

  • Travel may occasionally be required between the office, sites and client premises, travel for business purposes will be claimed through monthly expenses and paid in arrears at the relevant government rate.

  • 25 days annual leave per year plus bank holidays. This increases by 1 day after 2 full years completed service, then another day after 4 years and another day after 6 years service - up to a maximum of 28 days plus bank holidays. Days are deducted annually from leave for a full business closure at Christmas.

  • Pension contribution is 4% employee and 3% employer.
