We have an exciting opportunity for a Portable Appliance Tester to undertake Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) within Mission Systems.

The difference the Portable Appliance Tester will make

You will undertake Portable Appliance Testing primarily on-site, but with some travel required to sites both within the UK and overseas. You will help to enhance an existing busy team, bringing continuous professionalism to the Electrical Safety Testing service provided to customers.

As an Appliance Tester, you'll use your knowledge and understanding of the requirements for electrical equipment safety testing to undertake PAT as directed, primarily but not limited to, desktop equipment and some fixed installations. You'll accurately record test data using industry-standard test equipment and attach appropriate labelling to tested equipment. There may also be the requirement to undertake simple repairs at the point of test, or quarantine equipment which fails the test process., As a PAT Tester, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. You'll conduct PAT Testing primarily on-site, with opportunities for travel within the UK and overseas. You'll become an integral part of a dynamic team, upholding Babcock's high standards for electrical safety testing, bringing continuous professionalism to the service provided to customers. This post requires regular access to the most sensitive intelligence material.

Day to day, you'll:

  • Apply your understanding of electrical safety regulations to conduct thorough PAT testing.

  • Utilise your knowledge and expertise to test various equipment, primarily but not limited to, desktop equipment and some fixed installations.

  • Accurately record test data using industry-standard equipment and ensure proper labeling of tested appliances.

  • Identify and potentially rectify minor faults during testing, ensuring equipment safety.

  • Maintain a professional demeanor while representing the company at client sites


  • In this full-time role, you'll be based at our Cheltenham site. There will be occasional travel to other locations within the UK and overseas and at times, you may be required to work outside of our core working hours (0800-1600, Monday - Friday).

    You will be working in a highly effective team where the highest of standards will be expected from both a technical and behavioural perspective.

    Experience

  • Demonstrable fundamental working knowledge of electrical installations


  • A basic understanding of the hazards associated with working with electricity.

  • The practical ability to rectify minor faults and undertake simple repairs at the point of test.


  • Skills and attributes

  • You will have a methodical approach to tasks and the ability to follow process.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • The ability to work alone and as part of a wider team.

  • You'll need to be able to follow Health and Safety guidelines, risk assessments and the method statements associated with the role, ensuring Company health, safety and environmental procedures are always complied with.


  • Education and Qualifications

  • City and Guilds 2377-22 Certification, for the In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment (either you must already hold this or be willing and able to attain)

  • Basic familiarity with the latest edition of the IET Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment (either you must already possess this or be willing and able to attain), At Babcock we're working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us, you can play your part as a PAT Tester at our Cheltenham site.   • Basic knowledge of electrical safety hazards.

  • Ability to perform minor repairs at the point of testing.

  • Valid UK driving license.


  • Qualifications for the PAT Tester

    We value difference and we don't have a fixed idea when it comes to background or education, provided you can show the required level of experience and willingness to learn then we would like to hear from you.

    The successful candidate must be a sole UK National who holds, or is able to achieve DV security clearance for this role.

  • Occasional travel to other locations within the UK and overseas (including overnight stays) will be required.

  • Work outside of Core Hours (usually 0800-1600) will also be required on occasion.

  • This post requires regular access to the most sensitive intelligence material.

  • Applicants must hold or be prepared to undergo DV and SAO security clearances before taking up this post. (Time-frame for obtaining these clearances is 9-12 months, at least)

  • Additionally, this material is of particular sensitivity to the UK and its distribution must be restricted to UK nationals only.
