The Technical and Safety Department at both Heysham 1 and 2 power station are looking for two Emergency Preparedness Industrial Placements.

What is the Emergency Preparedness Industrial Placement Opportunity at Heysham Nuclear Power Stations?

We're recruiting for students to work within a dynamic team who are responsible for the overall emergency arrangements for the stations, this includes the planning, training, facilities, equipment and delivering an exercise programme to ensure regulatory compliance.

As an industrial placement, you will have the opportunity to gain experience in:-

  • Supporting the planning and delivery of emergency exercises/training events.

  • Production of communications material to support the administration of the Emergency Scheme.

  • Attend internal and external facing emergency planning forums this will include meetings with local authorities and emergency services.

  • Supporting improvement projects relating to emergency facilities and equipment


  • This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in all aspects of Emergency Preparedness and Response which can help you to build experience within nuclear operations whilst making a tangible contribution to the productivity and performance of nuclear within the UK., You will be based either at Heysham 1 or 2 Nuclear Power station in Lancashire and you will have the opportunity to work cross functionally with other departments, allowing you to get a comprehensive picture of how a nuclear power station is run.

    On track to achieve or will have already achieved a 2:2 undergraduate degree or 2:2 postgraduate qualification in a Business, Engineering or Science discipline
  • An interest in working in a highly-regulated / safety-conscious industry

  • Some basic knowledge of nuclear reactor design, operations and safety

  • Good interpersonal skills, including the confidence to approach and influence others

  • Ability to communicate clearly and accurately, both written and orally

    Training, development and support for you:

    Over this 12-month programme, most of what you learn will be on the job, with support from your mentor and the teams you work in. You'll have the opportunity to apply your academic training to genuine problems that are faced in the energy industry.
