Full Job Description

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service operates a fleet of 99 'Red Fleet' vehicles, 130 support vehicles and associated equipment. The fleet is a combination of LGV Fire Appliances, light commercial and cars. The Service currently maintains the fleet through their internal workshop facility based at Service Headquarters in Winsford. As part of the apprenticeship programme the successful candidate will be registered on the Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician apprenticeship and will be required to travel to Loughborough to undertake training comprising of 6 x 1-week blocks per year, (every 2 months) where you will be required to stay in overnight accommodation (4 nights).

As part of the apprenticeship and whilst developing your skills and knowledge you will support their qualified Technicians to offer an efficient and competitive vehicle maintenance service to Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.

You will be forward thinking, adaptable and have the ability to work in an organised and methodical way to analyse and solve problems. You will be able to demonstrate mechanical skills and communicate both orally and in writing.

Roles and Responsabilties:

  • Assist in vehicle repair and maintenance work to pre-determined standards, to ensure the Service Workshops meets its obligations to provide vehicles which are safe, reliable and legal in accordance with the Road Traffic Acts

  • Complete records for all vehicles and equipment maintained, to ensure the efficiency and accountability of the Workshop

  • Assist in the maintenance of specialist Service equipment and tools to ensure they are available for immediate use

  • Observe safe working practices to comply with the requirements of Health and Safety legislation

  • Identify and report to the Workshop Team Leader any vehicle defect, equipment defect or issue in the Workshop environment which has not been previously identified as part of an allocated job task

  • Communicate with Service Personnel as required, to promote good customer relations

  • Maintain high levels of cleanliness of workshops, vehicles and equipment to promote safe working practices

  • Drive service vehicles as directed provided relevant licence is obtained and training has been completed

  • Undertake and complete relevant qualifications that form part of the apprenticeship agreement


  • The training you will be getting

    During your heavy vehicle apprenticeship programme, you will be required to attend Scania's state-of-the-art training academy, the biggest automotive training facility in the UK.

    You will visit the training academy for 18 separate weeks (Mon - Fri) over the duration of the 32 month programme. All travel expenses to and from the academy, together with the costs of the hotel accommodation, are paid for by the employer.

    As Scania's dedicated training partner, Remit will deliver comprehensive training to all apprentices periodically throughout the programme.

    During these training sessions, your Development Coach will review your progress, set SMART targets, and identify any additional support that you may require.

  • IMI Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician

  • IRTEC Accreditation

  • Functional Skills Level 2 in English and maths (if applicable), GCSE or equivalent Maths (Grade 4/C) Essential

  • GCSE or equivalent English (Grade 4/C) Essential
