Full Job Description

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) laboratories provide a range of diagnostic and reference services to meet the needs of patients and those who treat them.

The H&I department in Birmingham provides testing and support services for stem cell and solid organ transplantation and also undertakes immunogenetic diagnostic testing.

Working at the Birmingham laboratory, you will provide vital support to scientific staff in a role which includes sample reception, reagent preparation and assisting with laboratory testing. You may also be relied on to update donor and patient information and to generate computerised reports or worksheets should the need arise.

For the full time post, you will be required to work 37.5 hours per week, for part time, you will be required to work 17 hours per week.Please note this role has no weekend/bank holiday/shift working., Working in the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) Laboratory, you will be required to participate in a range of routine clinical, technical and scientific activities in preparing and testing blood samples from transplant patients and their donors, with the support of your supervisor and other team members. Your responsibilities may include:

  • You may be required to support and train less experienced staff in some instances.

  • You will be required to undertake precise repetitive manipulation of equipment and blood samples and carry out routine tasks on a regular basis.

  • You will be required to handle blood samples and a range of equipment.

  • The role will require you to work and provide support during the routine opening hours of the laboratory. You will be required to manually handle equipment on a daily basis weighing up to 13 kgs, with or without mechanical aids, with appropriate training.
